Everyone has been asking, "What is that bright star in the West?" It's the Evening Star, Venus.
What is that bright star in the West? It's not a star nor a plane ... it's VENUS! That brilliant star that shines brightly in the west after sunset for a couple hours is the closest planet to Earth.
[Updated for 2008/2009]
In late 2008, Venus is located more southwest than west. The southwest is also the direction the sun sets during winter for the Northern Hemisphere.
The Evening Star
Venus is often considered the Morning Star or the Evening Star, depending on which time of day it is up and dominating the darkness. For example, through the fall and winter of 2008-2009, Venus will be the most notable object in the evening sky in the west/southwest after sunset. It shines at a stunning -4 magnitude. The only natural objects in the night sky that are brighter than Venus are the Sun and the Moon (Satellites can briefly flare brighter than Venus).
Because Venus is close to Earth, it does not twinkle, as a star does. Its bright white light will hold steady, while if you compare stars in the vicinity, they "twinkle" or seem to waver and even change color.
Seeing Venus Through Binoculars
Venus goes through phases like the Moon because of its position between Earth and the Sun. When it is more of a crescent phase it is closer to us and bigger, and also its angle makes it look farther from the Sun and places it in a darker sky. For these reasons, Venus is brighter in its crescent phase than when it is near full phase! The crescent phases of Venus can be detected through binoculars or a telescope.
Venus can get as bright as magnitude -4.7. From fall to winter of 2008/2009, Venus continues to brighten a little bit every night. Venus, the planet named after the Goddess of Love, will reach its brightest just after Valentine's Day 2009. On November 30, 2008, the year's brightest planetary conjunction will occur when dazzling Venus sits just two degrees from bright Jupiter in the southwestern sky. Venus will make other stunning pairings while it is up in the west/southwest, such as on December 31, 2008, when the moon sits beside it or January 22, 2009, when binoculars or a telescope put Venus a degree away from Uranus.
By March 2009, Venus will sink back toward the horizon and be washed out by the sun's light.

I would like to thank you for your information on the brightest star in the
west. My Husband and I have been watching this bright star in the sky every
evening for quite awhile now but, always wondering why we have not noticed
it before. It is simply intriging and now I know why? A planet, I never
even thought of it being Venus. Once again Thank You.

In the Bible there is a verse in the Old Testement in the book of Daniel
chapther 12 verse 3 that reads...
Daniel 12:3 Those who are
wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who turn many to
righteousness will shine like stars forever.
Last Friday night
me and some friends where setting up a "Christian Surfers" Surf
Companion on the beach in San Clemente, CA at T- Street and I was tripping
out on how Venus was shinning on the ocean straight to the contest area.
Then today I read that verse. Thanks for the info on what that star is...

excellent information. venus is just beautiful tonight. what is the star
to venus' southwest?
Nov 18, 2008 6:01 PM
Kelly Whitt :
Tonight, on November 18, 2008, the star just to the southwest of Venus is
Kaus Borealis, also known as Lambda Sagittarii. It is magnitude 2.8 and is
the top star in the teapot shape of Sagittarius. This link provides more
information about the constellation Sagittarius.
http://stargazing.suite101.com/article.cfm/sagittarius Venus is moving
up and awasy from the horizon and will be next to the star Nunki in the
handle of the teapot on November 22 and 23. Watch for Venus's big meeting
with Juipter on November 30 and December 1 when the moon joins the view.

GUEST: My wife and I had been looking at and ,guessing on,what such a
bright light it has been appearing in the western sky for a while. Thanks
for clearing that curiosity. Additionally,we had heard that the space
station had been appearing very large and bright in the western sky. Is that information correct?
Nov 21, 2008 7:04 AM
Kelly Whitt :
The International Space Station (ISS) is bright on its own but right now
(November 2008) it is especially bright with the addition of the space
shuttle docked on it. Where and when you can see the ISS depends on your
location. Go to Heavens-above.com and input your location to find when and
where to look for the ISS and space shuttle.

Venus is the brightest of all the planets. But Venus (and all the other
planets) can change brightness depending on when it is being viewed. Right
now (December 30 2008) Venus is by far the brightest star-like object in
the sky. If you look early enough in the evening, to the lower right of
Venus you will see Jupiter and Mercury. Jupiter is brighter than Mercury at
the moment. For more information on the planets, see the articles for the
Night Sky for December 2008 and the Night Sky for January 2009. Here

6 weeks, wondring. It semed to be moving about, with spheres flowing
outward each side.... many above and below. I last night watched it from 7
pm til 10pm.. Tonight 1-23-09, along where I usually watch, looking more
southwesterly, it moves up and down and from side to side. I used a base
for alinment, also watching several paths of planes fly upon it,
under....At 7pm it was in sight usually where it is, later 1 hour to be
exact it vanished. noticing before the dippers and milkyway it was between
them, now gone Where did it go I wondered, so I got into my truck drove
away from trees into a clear view area, a few miles.. no where it
was....to be seen. I feel a differ. I have been researching the end of time
thing 2012, Mayan Calendars may be causeing a scare. also a twinter months,
u can also see uranus, jupitor, venus also ,the moon as if the moon was
hosting them.......On Valentines day , goddess of love Venus, will be the
brightest, by March said to be gone. So it is said, Yet Where did it go

The star was in the east yesterday right next to a sliver of the moon at
6:45am. Beautiful. When I was reading your article I couldn't help thinking
how Venus resembles Jesus' coming. Jesus is coming back some day from
the East. (Matthew 24:27) Venus is the goddess of love. Jesus
demonstrated his great love toward us by dying on the cross. (Romans 5:8)
God is love. (1 John 4:8) Venus is called the morning star. Jesus is
called the Bright and Morning Star (Revelation 22:16) It's amazing how
many people are noticing Venus. Some are terrified, some curious, but just
think of all the people looking up to the heavens. Everyone will be
looking when Jesus returns, and every eye shall see him, even the ones who
killed killed him. (Revelation 1:7)

If you are seeing a bright star right now in the west, you are probably
looking at Arcturus.

There was a star known as the star of Bethlehem, which was seen to announce
the coming of the Messiah Yeshua Hameshia. But, this coming star shall be
brighter than that star, it will be seen soon, it is not far, yet it is not
near, it will be seen to announce the second coming of the Son of Man,
Yeshua Hamashia. The Star will appear in the Eastern sky, Yeshua is coming
soon.
